Embroidered tote bags
Totes are the rare promotional item people actually keep. A branded pen is binned within a month; a decent tote gets carried for years, which makes the cost per impression far lower than the unit price suggests.
Why embroidery, not print
Printed totes are cheaper, but the print cracks and fades once the bag has been through a wash and stuffed full a few times. Embroidery ages with the bag rather than peeling off it — the reason it is worth the difference on anything you plan to sell rather than give away.
Fabric weight
- 5–8oz cotton — light and cheap. Fine for conference and event giveaways.
- 10oz canvas — holds its shape when empty and stands up on a shelf. The retail standard.
- 12oz+ / dyed canvas — a genuine product in its own right, priced accordingly.
Anything below 8oz will not carry a large, dense design well — the fabric distorts around heavy stitching. For light totes, keep the design compact.
Design and placement
Centred on the front panel, roughly a third of the way down, is the safe default. Because a tote has no shaping to work around, you have more freedom here than on a garment: monograms, text-only marks, and wider landscape logos all work.
Handles
Self-fabric handles are cheapest. Contrast webbing handles cost a little more and make the bag look considered — worth it for retail.
